Nottingham and train journey that changed our lives

In the early 1980s Horton House Magazine Group formed our own Students Committee and began fundraising for new activities.  We successfully fundraised for 12 people to join others from Calderdale and attend Write First Time – a 5 day residential course in Nottingham.  There wasn’t a publication following that weekend but it inspired Peter Goode, one of our founder members, to write this poem. That weekend was fantastic and changed our views about the type of education we wanted to be involved in.  It also shaped our thinking about where to do it.  Chatting on the train home we dreamt of our own residential college run by us for others like us!

Billy remembers thinking – “it would be great if people like us could have one”.

Sandra said ‘We’ve had the opportunity to this course with no expense to us – all free –  and we want to give that opportunity to other people….”
